Our Story

We tell it like it is: straight from the dogs mouth.

The Underbite is blog inspired by this girl, Zoe; the crazy and amazing Boxer, Border Collie, Chihuahua, and Italian greyhound mix (there's more too, that's just the top 4. We DNA tested her, results were-she's a mutt). We rescued her as a 4-month-old puppy from a shelter in Maryland. She wasn't the first dog I cared for, but she was the first to be part of my family.

Zoe loves hiking, agility, fetch, trick training, playing along the beach, and hanging out with her dog friends. She has an excellent memory and knows 53 different cues and rising. We are learning how to dance together and I'll jealously admit she has better moves than I do.

Just like people, she has her interesting quirks. She loves watching birds, digging up gophers, barking at children playing outside, sitting awkwardly on the arm of the couch, and howling as we come home. She's almost 3 years old now, and still has that puppy energy. She runs the house and has us well trained. We love her all the same.

I am a young, animal behavior enthusiast who is currently working towards becoming an Animal Behavior Counselor and earning my CPDT. Raised in the military, I have moved to 9 different states and 3 countries in my lifetime. I met and married my husband, Adam, after my family moved to Virginia. We continue to move every 2 years and explore the world while we can. Eventually I hope to settle down somewhere.

I begun my interest in working with dogs at a local rescue, Small Miracles Cat and Dog Rescue. Starting as a volunteer, then as a kennel attendant for 1.5 years, I gained a lot of knowledge about dogs in a kennel environment, different dog temperaments, the basics of running a rescue, and common illnesses and treatments in dogs. It was so much fun getting to know the dogs and volunteers who worked there.

Eventually I became an Adoption Counselor and began to run dog adoptions for the rescue. I learned a lot about people, what brings them to rescue, what makes for a good rescue dog home, and why some dogs come back. I worked with adopters on the training they would need to implement for their new rescue pups and helped create educational information for the adopters to take home with them.

Foster puppies can be cute, fun, and super destructive, even from inside their pen!

After becoming close with my coworkers and other volunteers, I split off with two other women to begin a new foster based rescue, Love on a Leash Dog Rescue, Inc. (LLDR). There, I was a helping Co-Founder and the Adoptions Coordinator, responsible for all the adoptions, creating the documents for the rescue to use, and overseeing the Adoptions Counselors. I did additional work as a trainer, behavior counselor, attended meetings and provided advice to the president and vice president, fostered a few puppies and dogs, and helped with the never ending list of administrative work.

Almost at the same time as beginning our new rescue, I also began an internship with Humane Domain to learn more about dog behavior and training. I was working with an amazing woman who has devoted her life to Humane Education, rescuing animals, and helping us understand the real, scientifically backed, needs and actions of our companion animals. I learned so much from what she taught, and am forever indebted to her for opening my eyes.

I moved about 11 months after the creation of  LLDR to California to be with my husband and his new job. I am currently enrolled in courses to obtain my CPDT-KA and I hope to work with a rescue here in the future.

I wouldn't be where I am now without my friends in rescue showing me and believing in my abilities to work with dogs and people. I want to thank you all for driving me to learn more about training and providing me the opportunities to help where I can. Thank you Small Miracles, LLDR, and Humane Domain for giving me a place to grow, and to the leaders of these organizations for the work that you put into all the animals under your care.  A special thanks to Mona, Debbie, Dorothy, Barbie, Emily, Sarah, Marta, and many of the part time volunteers who pushed me to be a leader and helped me find my passion.
